A tradition dating back to 1816 — the Freemasons of Lodge St. George pay their annual rent of a single peppercorn to the Governor for the use of the State House, one of the oldest buildings in the New World.
What to expect:
- Parade led by the Royal Bermuda Regiment Band and Corps of Drums
- The Governor's arrival by horse-drawn carriage
- 17-gun salute and inspection of a military guard of honour
- Formal presentation of the peppercorn on a velvet pillow
- Garden party hosted by the Mayor at Somers Garden (open to the public)
A unique piece of living history — pomp, pageantry, and one very small rent payment.
